Persistent rainfall across various regions of Kenya, including Nairobi and the Rift Valley, has led to devastating flooding, saturating soils and threatening lives. In the early hours of April 29th, 2024, a dam near Mai Mahiu burst, unleashing a torrent of water that claimed 50 lives and left many more missing or injured. With forecasts predicting continued rainfall until at least May 6th, the toll rises: over 100 dead, thousands displaced, and vital infrastructure damaged, highlighting the urgent need for relief efforts.
HHRD is rallying behind the Kenyan officials to bolster relief initiatives for those impacted. Nairobi bears the brunt, with over 100,000 people displaced and nearly 150,000 affected by the flooding as of April 28th, 2024. Urgent requirements include access to clean water, nourishing meals, essential hygiene supplies, shelter, medical assistance, and basic amenities like soap and toothpaste. With your help, we aim to address these immediate needs and provide essential support to the affected communities during this challenging time.
As a registered International NGO operating in Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, and Tanzania, HHRD is proud to support orphans across East Africa. Currently, we're providing assistance to 3,950 orphans, with 759 still in need of sponsorship. In 2023 alone, we completed over 150 Water and Sanitation Hygiene projects, conducted 2,400+ cataract eye surgeries, and empowered 900+ graduates through our Skills Development & Livelihood Programs. Additionally, we've aided 164 students through Education Support Programs and implemented various seasonal projects like Ramadan Food Aid and Eid-ul-Adha Qurbani Programs.
