On March 28, 2025, two powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar’s Bago, Mandalay, and Southern Shan regions, effecting neighboring Thailand as well. The magnitude of the earthquakes were an unfathomable 7.7 and 6.4, killing over 3,500, injuring over 5,000. 9 million people have been affected overall. The shallow quakes triggered 73 aftershocks. Bangkok was declared a Level 2 disaster zone, exposing weaknesses in infrastructure and emergency systems, and highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian aid and coordinated disaster response.
HHRD plans to assist in Myanmar but will wait for official clearance due to sanctions and instability. Meanwhile, in Thailand, 20% of HHRD’s earthquake recovery beneficiaries are Burmese refugees. Initial aid includes Dignity Survival Packages—food and hygiene supplies—for over 560 families (about 2,800 people). With growing support from U.S. communities, more families will be reached. Aid will prioritize earthquake-affected locals and Burmese refugees, especially vulnerable groups such as women-headed households, orphans, the elderly, and marginalized communities.
HHRD has been working in Thailand for over a decade through proficient vetted partner NGO, having distributed survival packages during COVID-19 as well as wide-ranging healthcare & nutrition projects when COVID-19 pandemic hit; food distribution during Ramadan; Eidul Adha Udhiya; skills development & livelihood projects; and others.
