Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025, as a catastrophic Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds stronger than Hurricane Katrina and then moved on to Cuba as a Category 3. The storm caused massive destruction: tens of thousands lost their homes, most of Jamaica faced power outages, and deadly floods hit Haiti. In total, 45 lives were lost, with 1.6 million Jamaicans affected, including 284,000 children. Roads, hospitals, and infrastructure were devastated, and total losses reached US $8.8 billion 41% of Jamaica’s 2024 GDP.

HHRD’s longstanding work across the Caribbean, especially in Haiti, has built a foundation of trust and impact in the region. Through relief programs and Youth for Haiti service trips, HHRD volunteers have helped rebuild schools, distribute aid, and support orphanages following major disasters. These efforts have strengthened local resilience and nurtured youth leadership rooted in compassion.
