On Sunday, May 14th, 2023, Cyclone Mocha made landfall on the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast. Cyclone Mocha, with winds reaching approximately 209 km/h (130 mph), emerged as one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in the 21st century. The storm, however, weakened right before it approached the mainland but brought in heavy, destructive rain and winds.
Approximately 2.3 million people, comprising Bangladeshi and Rohingya refugees, are reported to be severely or moderately affected by Cyclone Mocha. This includes 1,342,126 Bangladeshi nationals in Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, and Rangamati, as well as 960,128 Rohingya refugees residing in Cox's Bazar and Bashan Char, which are home to the world's largest and most overcrowded camps.

Initial damage assessments were conducted by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) in Bangladesh, revealing 2,052 homes completely destroyed and 10,692 partially damaged. HHRD's vetted partner NGOs are working to establish effective communication with refugees and have already met many of them shortly after the cyclone. Immediate efforts include distributing bottled clean water and cooked meals, as well as providing hygiene provisions, sleeping mats, and mosquito nets. Donate now to bring comfort to these families suffering from one of the worst tropical storms in history.
