At the end of November 2025, extreme rainfall, amplified by rare cyclonic conditions, triggered devastating floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra provinces in Indonesia’s Sumatra region. The disaster swept through dozens of villages, collapsing homes, roads and bridges, cutting off vital access and sending entire communities fleeing. As of early December 2025, more than 800 lives have been lost, hundreds more remain missing, and millions have been displaced or severely affected, leaving many in urgent need of food, shelter, clean water, and relief.

Since the earthquake in 2009 HHRD has been working in the region and is providing programs through vetted partners which include: comprehensive rehabilitation (wheelchairs), education and orphan support, Ramadan and Qurbani for locals and Rohingya refugees, skills development trainings, and water projects. More recently, HHRD provided emergency intervention in the January and February 2021 earthquakes.
