During the months of January and June of 2024, massive fires broke out in Camps 5, 11, & 13 refugee encampments in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The fires caused catastrophic damage and loss. More than 300 shelter homes established by HHRD were damaged. HHRD’s local vetted partners have played crucial roles in assisting first responders, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local resources and capacities.
The affected individuals urgently need comprehensive emergency assistance and then long-term rehabilitation. Hundreds of families are homeless, requiring temporary shelters and the rebuilding of burnt houses & repairing of damaged ones. HHRD has adopted rebuilding the lives of these families. There’s a critical shortage of food and safe drinking water. Survivors need clothing, bedding, and hygiene kits. Long-term rehabilitation, including reconstructing homes and restoring livelihoods, is essential.
HHRD has assisted the people of Myanmar since 2008 and scaled up its assistance during the August 2017 mass migration to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Through the Rohingya Humanitarian Fund, and with the help of vetted partner NGOs, humanitarian assistance has been provided by deploying several emergency response teams from the USA, including construction of 5,900+ Shelter Homes till June 21st, 2024.
