Unseasonable rains followed by extreme heat have disrupted Pakistan's weather patterns in 2024, causing extensive flooding in several regions, affecting over 1.5 million people. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood alert for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan. As temperatures soar to 115-120°F in many areas, including over 14 cities in Sindh, the country faces severe health hazards. These climatic shifts echo the devastating 2022 Super Floods, affecting millions and causing significant damage to homes, schools, and agriculture.
The Emergency Relief and Disaster Management Department (ERDMD) of HHRD has launched efforts to address the humanitarian crises in Pakistan, focusing on heatwaves and floods. They are holding Heatwave Coping Awareness Sessions in schools and distributing materials at community centers and online. HHRD has established Cooling Points in 13 districts of Sindh, providing essential resources to prevent dehydration. For flood relief, HHRD is distributing Dignity Packages and clean water supplies in Chitral, Swat, Gwadar, Chaghi, and Noshki.
Since 2005, HHRD has operated in Pakistan with an annual budget surpassing $10 million. In 2024, its initiatives encompass aiding 10,500 orphans, 2,000 children with disabilities, and over 500 water projects. Additionally, 6,800 individuals benefit from the Skills Development & Livelihood Program, while 2,990 students receive educational support. Through the Youth Empowerment Program, 10,360 youths are aided. HHRD's endeavors extend to healthcare, rehabilitation, and seasonal programs, aiming to rebuild communities with housing, livelihood, healthcare, nutrition, and model village projects.
